September 8, 2008 John Henry, It is hard to believe you left us 11 months ago this evening.
How do I get through each and every day? First of all, you are the first "person" I think of.
How could a horse change my life so dramatically? You gave me purpose. You gave me friendship. You gave me understanding. You gave me love. Yes, I knew you loved me!
You knew you were a special creation of God. By just "being you" you made it easy for us to love you. I'm sure you knew that when you stood in your paddock for photo opts, and the people came to admire you, that you enriched their lives forever.
When your beautiful, soulful brown eyes looked at people, you made a connection that they would NEVER FORGET!
There are so many people that have become acquainted. Had it not been for your legacy and your mark on life - not just as a race horse - but as an inspiration to many.
I will "see you" on October 8th, the 1 year anniversary of your passing. I cannot wait to pay my respects to you along with many others. The Kentucky Horse Park will unveil your statue; forever in stone for future generations to come by your paddock and learn the amazing story of The Legendary JOHN HENRY!
John Henry... When trainer Lefty Nickerson sent you to CA and Ron McAnally in Oct. '79, he told Ron: "He's a nice horse, probably up to a mile and an eighth, but certainly not a world beater." You must have heard that and thought:"Oh yeah... Mr.Big Shot Trainer from Belmont... Well, I'll show you a thing or two." And then you showed the world for the next five years.
Dear John Henry, They are casting your bronze statue tonite in Lexington. Your friends are there to witness it. I have heard that it is truely AWESOME and looks just like you. It will be ceremoniously unveiled to the public at the Hall of Champions on October 8th. I can't wait to see it. Bob P.
