I was just remembering the last time I saw John a few weeks before he died. He was so fraile looking, but his spirit was still strong. This woman was feeding him carrots and I asked Cathy if I could go over and feed him a couple myself. I had heard that the only gray hair he had was a few strands in his tail, but that last time I saw him he had a dime-size patch of gray in the middle of his forehead. I stroked his head as he attempted to eat the carrots. His teeth were so worn down, he was having a real hard time chewing them. They were falling out of his mouth. But man, you should have seen the look in his eye. He was so determined to eat every last one. That was why he was so great, he was so determined and he never gave up--not even in the end when his body was failing him. His spirit could never be vanquished. I wrote Cathy after he died and told her that death could not destroy a spirit as indomitable as John's and I believe it. John's spirit will live forever, inspiring people until the end of time.

Whoever posted on March 1 @ 2:57 p.m. - I wish you had left your name or city. Your story moved me.

I, too, saw John Henry weeks before he died. My friends and I, and Lewis and Donna Cenicola, hand fed soft peppermints and chocolate donut holes to John as we stood next to him in his paddock (his domaine).

I returned in early October to visit JH for my birthday. It was then I "knew" it was his time. He was suffering by then, and, as Cathy Roby said, the light was no longer bright in his eyes. His head was low... he wanted to be left alone, and to leave this earth with some dignity. The horse park made the right decision.

The same friends that hand fed him in his paddock weeks early, were saying "good-bye". That was October 8, 2007.

I will never ever forget that day. I will never ever forget this incredible horse who continues to inspire us all.

I thank God for JOHN HENRY.

John Henry~
I meant to write on your blog yesterday, because yesterday was Jose Mercado's birthday.

Jose was not only your groom for many, many years, but he was your friend. He loved you. He respected your tenacity. In return, you respected and loved him! What a wonder FRIENDSHIP!

Happy Belated Birthday Jose!!

On March 9, 1975, the Lord blessed not only the racing world, but the people who would get to know you best. They accepted you for who you were. They loved you for who you were.

We all miss you, JH.

It amazes me because I continue to meet people who remember you and your legacy to this day! Their memories of you are loving ones...

Happy Birthday Little John!

I wish I had something more original to write. Just know that I love you and I miss you.
